State of Decay artists hid “a ridiculous amount of genitalia” in the game’s assets

Undead Labs senior designer Geoffrey Card recently revealed that independent contractors that helped develop State of Decay hid penises in the game’s assets.

The developer only noticed the unwelcome members hidden in textures when it started developing State of Decay: Year-One Survival Edition – a native 1080p Xbox One remaster of the original.

“The enhanced resolution and texture quality [of the Year-One Survival Edition] brought the penises to Undead’s attention,” Card explained at PAX East last weekend (as transcribed by Xblafans.com). “Some of our contractors worked a ridiculous amount of genitalia into the background.”

Card explained that the pork swords remained unnoticed in playtesting due to the original title’s lower native resolution. How they weren’t noticed in the Windows release – which is playable at native 1080p – remains to be seen.

State of Decay publisher Microsoft has since told Game Informer that “Undead Labs is not longer working with the contractor in question.”

The developer has begun the lengthy process of removing any semblance of genital organs from Year-One Survival Edition’s assets.

State of Decay: Year-One Survival Edition is scheduled to release in North America on April 28 and Europe on May 1 on Xbox One.
